“Paris of the East” dinner is June 23rd

Join us for another evening of East-West eats, meet-the-farmer discussion and neighborly company at our next dinner, “Paris of the East.” A playful nod to the decadent and Western-influenced Shanghai of the 1930s and 40s, we will be serving five courses and cocktail-hour canapes inspired by French and Chinese cuisines. Dressing up is not discouraged.

Loving Day Celebration is Today!

First of all, along with Finger on the Pulse, MeanRed Productions and Nicky Digital, we cannot even begin to thank the 600 people who came through the gates of BKLYNYard last night for some Hapa ‘cue. But we will in the next post. Because today is the anniversary of what many hapa and bi/multiracial Americans may not know is is the day that it became legal to wed interracially. It’s what our friend Ken Tanabe has called “Loving Day.” And without it, we may not have been born.

Next Feast: Hapa ‘Cue at The Yard, June 6th

Every culture loves to barbecue, so we’re firing up the grills at BKLYNYard for a pre-summer bash with our friends Finger on the Pulse! It’s a free party with music, beer to purchase, and a cheap-as-Brooklyn-gets $7 plate of Hapa Kitchen’s very own BBQ menu!

Event details:
Saturday, June 6
6-9pm
BKLYN Yard
388-400 Carroll St.
Brooklyn, NY (Gowanus)

Menu

Tequila-Soy Pork Kushiyashi
Vietnamese Pork Meatballs
Buffalo Tofu Skewers

sides:
Curried Potato Salad with Rosemary and Chickpeas
Honey Miso Coleslaw
Hoisin Chipotle Baked Beans

choose one main course and get all three (vegetarian-friendly) sides

We put on our thinking caps and hope to bring you the best of Asia’s flame-grilled flavors, applied to all-American barbecue favorites — on a stick. Yes, it’s really $7 per plate.

We’re proud to have all our meat provided by Tamarack Hollow Farm for this event. All-natural, pastured and humanely raised animals are the cornerstone of this small Vermont-based farm, which you can find the stand for at the Union Square Greenmarket on Wednesdays and Fridays. (For more on on this farm/farmer, see this profile on Not Eating Out in New York.)

To satisfy your sweet tooth, Treats Truck will be parked at the Yard, too, filled with hapa Kim’s desserts! We hope to see you down by the Gowanus! RSVP not required.

“Really?”

We are sufficiently tickled by the praise about the May Day dinner in this lovely recount by Huffington Post blogger Katherine Goldstein, who attended the event. What a terrific crowd there, too — the seats seemed to be filled with conscientious eaters with a keen interest in both sustainable agriculture and (good) food. Our only regret is missing out on the fun at the dinner tables! Thanks also to new friends Johanna for mentioning the event on her awesome site, Goodlifer — and for another peek at Queens County Farm Museum, be sure to check out the Greenmarket podcast (episode 11) created by Matt from Retrovore, who also came out to dine.

Katherine’s Huffington Post piece is the third in her series on exploring underground supper clubs, so don’t miss the her accounts of dinners at our friends One Big Table and Ted & Amy’s, too!

The Suspense!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 6th — something silly is coming to a certain yard in Brooklyn! (And it will likely involved lots of hapa-licious meat on a stick!!)

Dinner: Accomplished!

We’d like to thank everyone for coming out to Queens County Farm Museum on Friday for a special night with us. Due to rain, the may pole and bonfire activity was jettisoned, but we hope that guests enjoyed the rustic quaintness of the 18th-century farmhouse, fireplaces alight and blossoms abound, instead of dining in the orchard.

We’ll also hopefully have some surprises for you on Friday that aren’t mentioned in the below, almost-final menu (cough — lamb head in the fridge — cough).

For our fledgling Hapa Kitchen dinner, we’ll be serving al fresco on a farm! We’re having the farmers from the small upstate farm Apple Pond join us for a five-course hapa-style feast using many different parts of their lamb. We’re proud to be hosted by our friends at Queens County Farm Museum.
